Supporting someone in recovery
Loving someone in recovery can be hard in a way other people do not always see. There is no manual for this, and there is rarely one perfect thing to say. This page is for the people who want to stay reachable without trying to become the whole plan.
What ally mode is
Ally mode is a way to stay close to someone's recovery without being inside it. It is built for family members, friends, partners, and trusted people who want to be useful when support is invited.
It is not a monitoring tool. It is not a dashboard of someone else's data. The person in recovery controls their own account completely; you are reachable, not watching.
That boundary matters. Support works best when it is steady without becoming control, close without becoming surveillance, and honest without taking over.
What the app gives you
Circle is where reachability becomes practical. You may receive a Circle invite from someone in recovery. If they add you, you become reachable from directly inside Switchback, one tap away in the exact moment they want to reach out. That is different from being a name buried in a phone book.
Check-in gives you a private place to notice how you are doing too. Supporting someone is its own kind of hard, and your steadiness matters. Your check-ins are yours; they are not a report on the person you care about.
Resources give you plain-language guidance for supporting a loved one in recovery. The goal is not to make you the expert. It is to help you find steadier words, clearer boundaries, and a way to stay in your corner without carrying what is not yours to carry.
What this is not
There are things this app is not. Knowing them matters.
Switchback is not a replacement for therapy, family counseling, Al-Anon, or Nar-Anon. It is not a crisis service. If your loved one is in immediate danger, call 911. If you are struggling yourself, 988 is there for supporters too; call or text 988.
It is also not a surveillance or reporting tool. Privacy belongs to the person using it. Their journal, reflections, safety plan, Coach sessions, and personal answers stay theirs.
